See http://www.nomorecarts.com/ for a continuous ink refill system for
Epson printers.
The ink cartridges for Epson 870/1270 printers indeed have a microchip
installed. This sadly means: a) no third-party (cheaper) catridges
possible, and b) no refilling of used-up Epson cartridges possible.
Recently a new Epson 2000p photoprinter with pigment-based inks was
introduced. See for example http://www.luminous-landscape.com/2000p.htm.
Apparently its prints are expected to last 200 years.
