Olympus uses serial numbers, like most other camera and electronic
manufacturers so that each piece can be "registered" for warranty
purposes and for the customers uses (insurance, etc.) I once had an
Olympus OM-4T, 24mm f2 lens and a motor drive ripped off out of my car.
I gave the police a list with serial numbers and about six months later
the equipment was recoverd. It was recovered because the buyer, a
camera shop, sends all information about the stuff they buy to the
police, including the serial numbers.
