Since the camera works on manual, and all the active circuit components
(amplifiers etc) are common to both manual and auto mode this tends to
implicate either the photodiodes or the switch which connects the photodiodes
on auto. The most likely culprit is probably the switch or wiring to the
switch since it would be unlikely for both the photodiodes to fail
simultaneously. To check the switch you would have to remove the top panel
which requires some handtools and some reasonable level of mechanical skill
and then clean the auto/manual switch. To check wiring would additionally
require getting at the circuit board in the mirror box base.
