It's just too short a lens. You'll be too close to your subject--4 feet or
less, with no DOF, and
even at 85mm you'll start to get oversize noses and receding ears.
You can make good portraits with just about any lens. For a "pleasing"
perspective, I go a little
wider than most: a 55/57/58 for waist-up, an 85 for head & shoulders, and a
100/105 for head
shots.
