I usually load the canister first, pull the film over and stick the end into
the reel, making sure the perforation on the bottom side of the film is on
the sprocket. With the back still open, I then pull the advance lever just
far enough for the top sprocket to catch the first holes of the perforation
of the upper side of the film. If the reel hasn't caught the film will
usually slip out during this. If it doesn't, I then close the back and
finish the begun stroke of the advance lever, pull the film tight with the
rewind crank, and then operate the lever once more, making sure the rewind
crank turns - if it doesn't, I re-open the back and reload the film. This
way, I usually get 1 or 2, sometimes 3, shots more out of a film (yes, I
know film is cheap, but still, why not try to get the most out of it - I
hate for good things to go to waste). I started using this procedure after I
lost a number of good shots many years ago because the film had slipped out
of the reel unnoticed during loading, and it hasn't happened to me again
ever since.
