Hi Mike,
As a general purpose color print film, I would HIGHLY recommend Kodak's
Portra 160VC. The speed is good, the grain and resolution superb and the
color is terrific. The "VC" stands for "Vivid Color" and it will complement
the wonderful and intense hues you'll encounter in the Mediterranean region.
The beauty of the VC emullsion is that it does not exaggerate color garishly
as some films do. It just adds a beautiful vibrancy. If you prefer the
"all natural" look, the film is also offered in an Portra 160NC ("Natural
Color") version, too and in ISO 400 and 800 speeds. If you'd like to try
the higher speed films, Kodak's offering trial rolls on their Web site (far
from free, however). See
http://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/store/catalog/Category.jhtml?CATID=474 .
The Portra films are in Kodak's "Professional" line, and so may not be
available at your neighborhood drug store. Most pro-oriented camera shops
have it, though...or you can order it by mail easily. If you can find it,
the 5-roll "Pro-Pack" is the best buy. One caution about "professional"
films: they are designed to be at their color quality peak when you buy
them (since pros run through film quickly and in great quantity). If you
need to store pro film for a few weeks or more, it's best to keep it
refrigerated. Consumer films are designed to peak sometime after delivery
since amateurs and "snapshooters" generally take longer to finish and
process a roll. Other than that, there's little if any difference...and no
compromise in quality...between consumer and "professional" films.
And, hey, we wanna see some pictures when you get back!
