Too true.
If you ever attempt anything like this you need to at least mark which
position the threads mate at, as the zooming helical threads are usually
multistart. Because of the relative movement of the groups the reassembly can
be an absolute nightmare on a zoom or IF focus lens if you do not now the
correct start position(s).
