One reason the professional journalist ranks are so full of Nikon and
Canon users is simple convenience and availability. If you're
shooting a press conference in North Mud Hole and drop your 300/2.8 &
F5 in the water, you can replace it today if you're lucky or tomorrow
with a credit card and an emergency phone call to B&H. You may even
be able to borrow someone else's spare who's covering the same
game/festival/press conference/disaster/whatever. When you're tough
on equipment, you want equipment that can be easily replaced.
Similarly, I know a lot of traveling musicians who use their
custom/vintage gear in the studio and at home, but only take
sponsored new gear on the road - why mess up the good stuff?
But I suspect that once you get away from the national press and back
down into local press, studio photogs, and fine art photogs (where
immediate replacement isn't a need that comes up all that often),
Olys are better represented. At least they have been in my
experience.
