There are many ways to deposit a reflective coating on a glass surface, such
as a telescope mirror. Some are chemical, some use a vapor that condenses on
the surface. Years ago, several companies would "silver" telescope mirrors
for amateur telescope builders. Likely they still do. The "silver" can be
real silver, even gold, but is more commonly aluminum. Different metal
reflect certain parts of the electromagnetic with differing efficiencies.
Various over-coatings can also be deposited, like the coatings on camera
lenses.
The silvering that is OK for an antique dresser mirror may not be OK for
your OM's prism. Back in the 18th century, bell metal, speculum, was used
for telescope mirrors. As the final figure was polished-in with finer grit
abrasive, the surface became more reflective. By about the early 19th
century, chemical deposition of metallic silver on glass started to be used
for mirrors. Both speculum metal and silver-coated mirrors tarnished and had
to be re-polished, with attendant risk to the geometry of their surfaces.
Practically speaking, I'd bet a "new" prism from a "parts" OM-1 would
probably be cheaper than a proper re-"silvering".
