I've taken pictures from an aircraft window at cruising altitude, and
been on planes where the aircrew pointed out photo possibilities. Once
the attendants supervised passengers swapping seats, to make sure
everyone got a view/picture and the aircraft (747) was not
unbalanced. Qantas run sightseeing flights down to the Antarctic,
and you can bet cameras are on those. I believe they only put
170 people on a Jumbo for those flights, so that everyone gets a good
view.

What isn't allowed is using a camera on landing and take-off, because
it could become a missile in a mishap. If turbulence is expected
they might want you to put your camera away too. Perhaps some
airlines are paranoid about CAT.

The Space Shuttle carries cameras and ordinary laptops, so I
think the hash argument might be just that.
