The offset balls of the Gitzo heads drove me crazy on the one that I
had. I sold it. The Arca Swiss is MUCh better, although a lot more
expensive and heavier.

I noticed that the recent Gitzo brochure has added a G1387 that will
take Gitzo, ACRA, Kirk and Foba wedge shape plates.
Also new is a G1377M center ball head. There is a review of this in
"The Natural Image" by George Lepp. Might be on-line - www.leppphoto.com
He compared it to the Arca-Swiss B-1 ball head. The Gitzo is 5.5 inches
versus 4.25 inches for the B-1, and 1 lb 15 oz for the Gitzo and 1 lb
11 oz for the B-1. The Gitzo is cheaper, at $130 or so.
Personally, I have yet to find the right head for me. I have a Gitzo offset
ball head (g1276M, which is not very useful with heavier lenses, but not bad
for some macro stuff.
