Does the alkaline battery mod. which is commonly done fix this (i.e.,
with a voltage regulator) or does it simply drop the voltage with a
resistor? A technician I spoke to here offered to do it the second
way, saying he got the instructions from the Internet. He seemed to
be referring to Technet, but not being a subscriber I can't
check. I can think of at least two other ways to botch this job: a
single alkaline not having enough voltage to run the regulator IC,
and a zener circuit drawing too much current and running the cell
down.
I still have 3 mercuries in the drawer here. To quote Daffy Duck,
