I think Minolta invented it it. I´ve read it in a book about Minolta
camera history. There is a photo in the book, showing a complete assembled
camera beeing the film rails milled. That´s the most precise and
cheapest way to do this.
Of course todays plastic cameras have no longer milled film rails, so
precission is only as good as manufactoring and assembly of the parts.
One OM-2SP catalog shows the open back of the camera with the film rails
black and unfinished rounded. Probably Olympus was in a hurry to
complete the cataloge.
