Fill flash. What I have learned.

The shutter speed is set to 1/60. You generally do not want Aunt Mable's
artichokes in focus with the portrait style shot of the people. So go a slow
speed to use a wider aperture and limit depth of field.

Lets say you are at 4 meters, the aperture is f4. With 25 ASA film, these
are perfect for the T32. But this is full power. If the ambient light gives
you f4 at 1/60, and so does the flash, the fill effect is very pronounced.
Generally you want a fill ratio of 1:2 or 1:4. So you have your exposure,
you need to limit the flash.

Normal Auto.
If htere is a f4 setting on the flash, do not use it. It will be correctly
(1:1) exposed at this value. Select it to f2 or f1.4. These settings
actually make the flash more sensitive, as it expects some light reflection
from further away. These are two or three stops from a 1:1 fill ratio.

Fully manual
Sometimes, you cannot get the right normal auto setting. Go manual. If you
need to drop the flash by 1 stop, put one finger over the flash. Two stops,
two fingers. You can use filters to reduce the light output, but depending
on what you are photographing, you may not have time. If the flash has many
manual settings, use these.

Summary
1. Select the film speed for depth of field in the expected light at 1/60
2. Set the flash output to be less than the required at that aperture.
3. Impress everyone by putting your fingers in front of your flash head.
4. A flash in non TTL mode will not accept the quench signal from the
camera.
