I have an article on this very topic in the latest issue of a magazine i write
for.
It is an Australian publication, Better Photography, and the issue is the
current one - No. 18, Summer 2000.
The photographer was Joe Rosenthal - and the pic wasn't staged. The marines had
raised a smaller flag earlier in the day, but later re-did it with a
bigger flag and pole. The pole was made of solid iron and joe estimated
that it would've weighed around 200 pounds.
Joe says the shot definitely wasn't set up, although he says he DID do
some set-up shots shortly after the famous pic - one shot of 15-20 marines
cheering and waving under the flag, and another shot of three marines
holding the pole. However, the famous shot was un-posed.
Joe Rosenthal claims that millions of dollars were made form that one famous
pic.
He also says tat none of the millions ever reached him. He was just a salaried
photographer working for his employer. Work-for-hire,
perhaps?
