dictated design. OTOH Zeiss Ikon created, by design committee, a precision
optical instrument using Carl Zeiss lenses and Schott Glass and few will
disupute that too.
===========================

Much to much is made of Schott glass. Al Schott glass is, really, is
optical glass sold by a company called Schott. it is used as a raw
material for Zeiss lenses, B&W and Heliopan filters, Schneider and
Rodenstock lenses. But these lens makers sell very fine lenses because
they design and manufacture fine lenses. They could just as easily use
Japanese optical glass and their lenses would be just as good.

But there was one major difference between Leitz and Zeiss in the early
days. Leitz tried to make the best corrected lens they could, even at the
expense of contrast if necessary, and Zeiss tended more to sacrifice
wide-open performance for contrast. that's why Zeiss stuff with the
4 element Tessary formula for so long whereas Leitz started selling
5 element Gaussian-corrected lenses much earlier than Zeiss.
