Just thought I'd mention a review of the OM4Ti in this week's British
Journal of Photography. They review 3 cameras from the 1980's still in
production - the OM4Ti, Nikon FM2 and Leica M6.
Discussion of the OM4Ti unsuprisingly concentrates on the metering system,
though mention is made of the uncommon shutter speed ring/aperture ring
positioning. Unlike other reviewers, Jon Tarrant says those "unaccustomed to
to the Olympus way of doing things can find this design hard going at first,
but perseverance pays off in the long run".
The 24/2, 50/2 and 100/2 Zuiko lenses are discussed briefly. A note is made
of their compact size and relatively low weight, along with the fact the
OM4Ti body is smaller than the Nikon, and both are lighter than the M6.
While an image taken with the 50/2 illustrates the article, its performance
is not tested. Shame. Closing comments:
"Excepting Olympus's companion OM3Ti, no other 35mm available, be it
long-lasting or packed with the very latest high-tech wizardry, gives the
user this sort of control. The OM4Ti is, quite literally, a gem."
Favourable words indeed. It's a pity the reviewer then gives only Olympus UK
as a contact, since they have done nothing to promote their SLRs in recent
years. In fact, despite a strong Pound, they saw fit to push new prices into
orbit, thereby discouraging interest. I'm sure it makes financial sense to
someone...
