My $.02 worth: Give a look to the Tamron 60-300 zoom. It's heavy
compared to Zuikos, but doesn't handle badly. It is not really much
heavier than the older Vivitar and Soligor 70-210 zooms. It is slow, but
sharp and covers a longer range than most zooms. If you need to, you can
always resolve the speed issue with faster (400 ASA) film, although I
have used mine extensively for shooting motorsports with mostly 100 ASA
and gotten good results. For what it's worth, I don't really think you
will want to use a tripod or monopod for this type of photography. I
think you will find it just gets in the way and slows you down.
