Ok, so there's one more prerequisite I forgot about - the sensor must be
roughly equivalent to 1600 ASA film in sensitivity, with full aperture
viewing (i.e. only stop-down when the image capture button (my
terminology- can't really call it a shutter release, can we?) is
pressed.
Not a complete solution to the problem you describe, but should make the
thing usable under a wider range of conditions without reintroducing
mirror slap or (very much) delay.
