I bought a can of silicone spray lubricant, held my breath, and gave my
OM-1 a very light lube job. After removing the bottom plate, I gave it a
couple of very tiny spurts. A few other strategic spots got a small shot
of silicone, including the inside gear of the shutter speed ring.
I tried the freezer test again, leaving the camera in for a couple of
hours. The camera was extremely cold, like a block of ice. This time,
the OM-1 fired off perfectly at all speeds. I want to thank someone for
suggesting this lubricant. The fluid that suspends the silicone in the
spray is also a solvent. This may also have something to do with freeing
up the shutter at the slower speeds.
Unless there are some long term detrimental effects of silicone spray, I
would have to say the silicone lube job was a success.
