I,ve always followed the dictum of- "let the punishment fit the
crime":-).
I use the focal length that allows me to say what I or "they" want to
say about them/themselves, and by where It is to be said. If a Macro
lense interpets best what you want to say about your subject then it is
no more or less right/ wrong than a fisheye or 500mm mirror. Of course,
if you are shooting for a client-
I'd find out what they had in mind before going "artistic".
Wide angle- Normal- Telephoto? If time and space permit shoot all three.
In my personnel experience-what you shoot for yourself; what you shoot
for your client; what you shoot for other photographers will ,most
likely, be governed by differing criteria.( soapbox mode off)
