This refers to what I think is primarily an Americanism, based on the
products of the Heinz Company. At least at one time, they made 57 products,
including the ketchup (sp?) for which they are famous. In the e-mailer's
context, it would mean a newsgroup that covers the gamut (from soup to nuts?).
More humorously, it can refer to a dog of indeterminate origin (a mutt),
since he's a mix of all sorts of dog varieties. Also humorously, Americans
may refer to their own heritages as "Heinz 57", in recognition that most
Americans are "mutts" rather than purebreds of any particular nationality.
[I've heard that mutts often have the best temperaments and highest
intelligence. ;-)]
