I know this thread has degenerated a bit.
But back on a practical note, I've become fed up with buying different
size filters and I usually carry a 72mm polarizer and a Cokin adapter that
will fit up to 82mm and use step down rings directly from 72 to 49, 55, and
62. It's a LOT easier, albeit a bit more expensive for the 72mm filter,
but you only have to buy one. It even works on the 21/3.5 without
vignetting. You can do the same thing for skylights/UV, but it's not as
practical. I'd go with same diameter filters for that, mainly so you can
use the correct hoods.

What happened to all the Zuikoholics around here? The obvious answer to
Warren's dilemma is for him to purchase a set of Zuikos with 55mm filter
threads. Get those f/2 wides, Warren! Don't forget the 100/2... and the
200/4... then there's the 50/2 Macro...
Of course you need to keep your 49mm set of lenses, too. For when you want to
travel light.
I'm so disappointed in everyone...
