I wonder if the FTP-by-email servers still exist? I used to use them
a *lot* back in the dark days before the WWW, when my employer had
fast-but-non-interactive internet access.
Actually, there's still an "accessing internet resources by E-mail
FAQ" floating around out there.
Failing that, most telescopes are bundled with software---perhaps the
'scope owner already has some. What I generally do is print out some
maps of the area I'll be viewing, generated especially for my location
and the current date. I can then scribble directions and notes all
over them, unlike a star atlas.
Having a notebook computer can be cool too (one of the packages I have
has a neato red-on-black display mode for use when you're out viewing
and don't want to trash your night vision).
