I think you are referring to an 8k digital film recorder. Most quality
digital film recorders work as either 4k,8k or 16k. Generally speaking
an 8k recorder will record to the limits of the highest quality 35mm
recording film. A 4k recorder will suffice in most instances. However
8k and 16k recorders can also be used for medium & large format films.
For best results it is always a good idea to record past the limits of
the film if you have the equipment and resoures. Of course there are
varying degrees of quality between film recorder manufacturers. Because
of changes in photo digital output devices in the last few years most
newer output devices can print directly to print paper at superior
resolutions. The need for the interneg for this process has been
greatly deminished.
