It would be an interesting cruise into realm of psych. to study the
attitudes and thoughts of people who would prefer to use manual focus gear
vs. the the rest of the "lemmings" who have chosen to go the route of the
wonderbrick.

Are they the kind of people who prefer an automatic, safe society, with
everyone controlled and limited to just a few options in life, so that the
future for generations to come will be secure?

Or are they the kind of people who prefer to live life with all the options
and amneties that they want or feel they need without societal controls
issued forth upon them.

OMers are behind societal flow in two ways, one of course is the one just
mentioned, the other is the video revolution. Journalism and documentation
seems to be lending more towards video and less toward single frame.

Our local newspaper is a good example of this. Yesterday we had a guy (in an
SUV of course) who crashed into another driver, took off from the scene with
the other driver pursuing him to get his license plate #. Well the guy in
the SUV pulled out his firearm (we all know that this is a required item for
SUV ownership as well as the cell phone) and began to shoot at the driver
pursuing him. The SUV shooter now barricades himself in his apartment, where
a standoff ensued for a good part of the day with the SUV shooter hider
finally gives up. This and another homicide filled the airwaves (TV and
radio) all day with the news choppers for aerial video giving the images.
What was in the newspaper this morning? a little clip back in the nether
regions of the paper, with no photos. Still frames are apparently becoming
scarce. Anyone interested to come to Vegas as a freelance newspaper
photographer? They probably don't want you.

This all brings me to the everyday survival of the Las Vegas freeways and
streets. How can anyone with a collection of OM gear make it safely across
or even escape out of this city without a Bronco, Subarban, Hummer (or
something with a decent ground clearance) to take their pictures???
The freeways are commonly littered with all kinds of construction debris,
(lumber, bricks, even wheelbarrows and ladders) to clear. I have watched as
the lexus, mercedes, common cars get wrecked by running into this stuff at
70MPH while my trusty Bronco with 33 inch tires and 2" thick rubber(12MPG)
just takes all this stuff as all in a days work!
I'll never willingly own a car again, trucks are the best way to cut across
town to take pictures, most definitely!!!
I could also tell you about the time where I have cleared a 10" boulder on
the road, where the minivan following way to close behind me, hit the thing
and trashed the van. He did well not to wreck and kill his family over it, I
believe he now owns a Bronco too!
How can any OMer get anywhere in this world to take their pictures without a
Bronco?
It would be interesting indeed to see how the psychology differs from your
average OMer and the wonderbrick users, which now comes back to full circle
on this message.
