>>> Did you know there ARE AF lenses you can put on a manual camera body, AKA
OM? They're big, heavy and focus slow. I've never been able to find one since
they are rare, only having been made for a year or so before camera body
driven AF took off. I've thought an OM-PC in program mode with ESP on and one
of these AF lenses would make an interesting OM grab shot camera. Anyone have
real experience with these self-contained AF lenses?<<<
Of course there is the 35-70 AF Olympus, which will AF on any Olympus camera.
These show up occassionally on ebar and swap meets. With an OM-F you can get
real AF with this lens. I think VIvitar made three SC-AF lens, a 200mm,
28-70 and 75-200 or so. Tamron made a 70-210 Adaptall AF lens. I think I
even saw a Sigma 28-70 AF lens at Studio City Camera (Calif.) last week. You
might give them a call if interested. The problem with all of these lens is
that the AF system is primitive and involve sticking a semi-silvered mirror
in the light path of the lens. This will cause some finder dimness and some
optical compromise. As far as real experience, other than putting one on a
body and finding it did really AF, no. I do have a couple of OM-77 bodies
though as curiosities.
