Ken,
I copied a few hundred slides (+multiple copies of each) not too
long back and also used the Ektachrome 5071.
Here are a few comments on things I did slightly differently from you
which may help others contemplating doing this:
* I bought bulk film as the cost differential was so large from seperate
rolls. (It was a break even but I then landed up with spare film!)
* I used a set of acetate filters I previously used for Cibachrome printing
* I used a Novoflex bellows with enlarger lens at F8
* I built my own slide holder and diffuser using an old micrometer stage for
easy adjustment of cropping. If you build your own, beware of placing
the diffuser too close to slide as the depth of field may put details of
diffuser surface onto clearish sections of slide like the sky.
* I used OTF Flash for trans-illumination and made adjustements to the filter
pack for color temperature accordingly. (Previously I have used a slide
projector as light source). I adjusted the diffuser effective density by
putting layers of tissue paper over the flash to get mid range dump
values
from the flash. (Watch the flash recycle time (to light on) to estimate
amount of energy used)
* Flash has some advantages :
1)The flash eliminates any chance of camera vibration killing sharpness.
2)The color temperature of the flash is not dependent on line voltage as
the incandescent lamp is. (unless you use a voltage stabilised enlarger
as lamp source.)
* I used a high intensity lamp on gooseneck to illuminate the diffuser
for accurate focussing + the OM varimagnifier. Helps for older eyes.
* The color temperature of the flash is not dependent on line voltage as
the incandescent lamp is. (unless you use a voltage stabilised enlarger
as lamp source.)
* The 5071 film speed is meant to be determined for the film batch by
trial and error so you are meant to do a test roll for your particular
setup.
The nominal EI from Kodak depends on film batch and is printed
on the box. (mine was 25ASA) I had the impression the film may
suffer from reciprocity failure more easily than regular film.
