Yes; Uni-Loc tripods were I think originally distributed exclusively by
Jessops (also of Leicester), and maybe they still are. Paterson bought
Kennett Engineering that mfrd the original Benbo, and I believe the
designer started Uni-Loc when the original patent on the "Bent Bolt" design
expired. The address I have for Uni-Loc is Uni-Loc Products Ltd., Firbank
Way, Leighton Buzzard LU7 8YJ. Tel 01525 372030. That from the 1999
"Professional Imaging Directory".

You're correct that the designer of the original Benbo also designed the
Uni-Loc, incorporating some improvements as well. I have a Benbo Trekker
and a Uni-Loc Major, and the latter is rather easier to use. The swivel
mechanism is freer - the Benbo needs to be wrestled with. The Trekker is
less than rigid, although it's OK if not extended *too* far. The Uni-Loc
is fine, even with my RB67 on top, but it's *very* heavy. While setting up
a Benbo / Uni-Loc can sometimes seem like wrestling with a set of bagpipes,
I wouldn't use anything else when out in the landscape. The waterproof
feet are an advantage too - you can set one up in a river and not need to
worry about it! I like the idea of a carbon-fibre version to trim the
weight to a level more in keeping with the OM-System.
