I was in basically the same spot you are about 2 months ago. I had
a Minolta p&s camera that was fun, but really wanted a little more
control. As a student, money was (and is) tight so I wanted an
inexpensive SLR, with lots of available, reasonably-priced lenses.
Very quickly, I determined that an OM-1(N) or -2(N or S) really
was the best option for this. I ended up with the OM-1N because
I was afraid of circuitboard replacement problems with the -2's and
I wanted something that would force me to think about the exposures.
My p&s is good enough when I want auto exposure.
I've been very very happy with the 1n. It does everything I need,
the interface is very nice (I love aperture and shutter speed on
the lens), and it makes a great *click* when you release the shutter.
(and everyone knows that's what separates the good cameras from the
bad.. heh)
the only bummer I have noticed is that it wants a 1.35v mercury battery
(px625 I think) for the light meter, and you can't buy those anymore...
mine came with a 1.5v silver oxide battery that fits and runs the meter,
but as I understand it, it's probably between 1 and 2 stops too high.
I just overexpose a bit, and everything works. Of course I'm using print
film, so I'm sure that the labs are correcting my screwups anyway. I
know there is an adapter you can get to drop a 1.5v battery to 1.35 and
fit nicely in the battery slot.... or you could open it up and stick
a diode or voltage regulator in......... but I wouldn't do that. :-)
(btw, anyone know where I could get a mercury battery?)

I got the om-1n instead of the om-1 mostly arbitrarily -- I don't know
if there are any rational reasons to prefer one over the other.
good luck
