Does anyone have any repair recommendations for Oly in UK?
My OM1, circa 1975, has only been in for repair twice, both times to the
same guy with nearly disastrous results. Shall I 'name and shame' him?
Some years ago a shutter problem developed which the guilty party repaired
apparently satisfactorily for around £50 UKP.
Last year I had problems with a light leak. It went back to the same
repairer who returned it to me three times as repaired. After the third
time I took it back he gave me a refund and said it was beyond economical
repair and should be scrapped ( I got nothing for the three wasted outings
and film or processing).
Not wanting to give up on an otherwise fine camera I had a long hard look.
The problem couldn't be the back because both the repairer ( and me before
him ) had comprehensively taped up the usual light seals. Looking at where
the fogging on the photo was I narrowed down the search area and peeled off
the leather trim in the suspect part. There, on the front of the camera,
right near the edge of the leather was a missing body screw - and the
guilty repairman is the only person ever to have taken a screwdriver to my
camera ( unless it was omitted during manufacture but I don't believe this
).
The fault had never occured until the leather shrank a little admitting a
tiny amount of light. It was not enough to see but enough to put a streak
on an exposed frame which was left in that position for a few minutes. This
in itself should have been a giveaway to the repairer but he never looked
beyond packing more and more padding into the standard light seals. If I
could find the fault why couldn't he?
The cure was a 1cm square of black adhesive tape, and no problems to this day.
As a postscript, I took in my Weston Master V - which I use with the Hassie
- to the same guy: he is the only one in this area. He told me he could put
in a new selenium cell but when I put it through its paces back at home it
gave completely inconsistent readings. A replacement, new, cell put this
right but why didn't he just test it before returning it to me?
Now I know who NOT to go to but don't have anyone else lined up for next time.
