Ron,
The later model bodies offer several "advancements" over the 1 series.
The 2s, 3, and 4 series cameras will give you spot metering, which can let
you make exposure determinations more accurately and precisely. The 2s and 4
series have aperture-prefered auto exposure, which can make shooting a little
faster and easier in some situations. The 2s also has program mode, which
might be useful if you have to lend your camera to a novice for snapshots.
These newer bodies also feature OTF flash (except the original 3), which is a
big improvement over manual or flash unit-regulated automatic flash in most
situations.
The prices on the 3 and 3T(i) are high because of their relative scarcity.
Unless you absolutely must have battery-independent operation, it's much more
economical to buy one of the others, with the added automatic operation
benefits. Used 4 series and 2s bodies are pretty reasonable, so you might
want to start there. Of course a nice shiny new 4Ti or 3Ti would be nice,
too! :-)
Of course, your glass puts the image on the film, the bodies just help.
HTH,
Greg
