For those of you who are willing to disassemble your precious
OM-[34]T(i) to renew it's youthful good looks, or if you happen to
have an SR-71 lying around that needs a paint job, this notice just
arrived in the August 1999 "NASA Tech Briefs":
"Method for Surface Texturing Titanium Products
(U. S. Patent No. 5,853,561)
Inventor: Bruce A. Banks, John H. Glenn Research Center
This patent discloses a method by which the surface of titanium
and/or titanium alloy objects... may be electrolytically textured
with a pattern of uniformly configured "pock mark" pores or pits...
The process employs an electrolytic cell in which the object or
objects to be textured are immersed in a sodium chloride and water
solution... [and] electrically connected to the positive terminal of
a DC power source... During the electrochemical process the
electrolyte is agitated by an ultrasonic transducer."
So, get out the battery charger and kitchen salt, and be sure to
shake it up good. Then you'll have a surface that will hold paint
better!
