As I understand it (and don't hold me to it!), Thrystor circuitry is a
battery saving thing. When in auto mode, say the subject reflects back
enough light for proper exposure. A little hole cum sensor at the front of
the flash collects reflected light, and when it thinks you've got enough,
it quenches the flash burn. Now, in addition to that, it /saves/ the
unused charge in the capacitor, instead of wasting it. In effect, think of
it in terms of you putting out a fire with buckets of water. Once the fire
it out, the "thrystor person" stops throwing the leftover water, instead
of completely emptying the tank. Hope this makes some sense. Best,
