Jerry,
The battery check LED circuit is a simple discrete 3 transistor
circuit and should be quite possible to repair, It does use surface mount
parts making it more difficult to solder and requiring a very fine solder
iron. It should be very reliable as it is rather simple. I would start by
first checking the leads to the circuit, the battery test switch and then the
LED. You can then do an in circuit rough check of the transistors with an
ohmeter on the diode test position. Surface mount transistors are available
from NTE (on the web) and from places like Fry's in CA and maybe even Radio
Shack.
The service manual does have a schematic.
