The 80mm OM macro is optimized specifically for 1:1(this is just a guess but
say 5 inches), probably yielding superb performance above and below that by a
factor of 2 to 4. However, since it does not have floating element
correction, it's performance may fall off dramatically if very far from that
optimum point. Hence, it is very much a specialist lens--but it's
availability contributes to the fact that Olympus has the best overall macro
system available. To the best of my knowledge, no other major camera company
offers a 1:1 optimized macro.
The 90 macro, on the other hand, is probably optimized for 1:10(guessing 3
feet) overall and with it's floating element construction is known to give
superb performance from 1:2(the 80s territory) to infinity.
