Tim,
To test shutter speeds at home, at least from 1/60th up, you only need
a TV. The TV screen (NTSC - NA & Japan) is repainted each 60th of a
second with 212 horizontal lines. (PAL & Secam differ in frequency &
lines, sorry, please look it up).
So take a picture with some light & uniform subject showing, & count
the horizontal lines that show :
lines Shutter Speed
212 60 (full screen)
101 126 (= 60 * 212 / lines) (1/2 screen)
