I had a look at the site where John Hermanson put up a file showing a sort of
brochure with Japanese writings on top saying OM-1 and 2 True Leather Coverings
and pieces of leather for the body cover.
The URL was http://www.zuiko.com/54.html
I was curious because I had seen an OM-2, I believe, with red leather coverings,
when I was shopping in camera stores in Tokyo. This was a store where I bought
my Cosina 20mm/3.8 in the OM mount. I had looked three other samples of this
lens in two other stores, but all three had some dust particles inside the front
element. Since I was buying this lens new and did not know whether I would like
it, I wanted to have one as clean as possible. The price was around 10,000yen,
and I paid the highest price at this store where I saw the red-leather covered
OM-2. I actually held this OM-2, since the salesman wanted to demonstrate the
lens to me. He said that this red OM-2 was for the ladies.
As for the lens, I did not buy it the first time I walked into the store. Even
though the salesman said that this was the last one in the OM mount, I walked
out in rain to two other camera stores near Shimbashi Train Station. The other
two stores had many used Oly goodies including a used 24mm/3.5 shift in like-new
condition, but I had already bought my 24mm shift brand-new, so I could not take
advantage of this find.
The rain was getting harder and I came back to the first store. The salesman
welcomed me back and said that he would give me a store-used 62mm Nikon filter
free upon my purchase. I thought that was not good enough since I knew that the
lens was being sold at another store for 9800yen. This Utsuki Camera in
Shimbashi had a price of 11,700yen. The salesman decided to give me the 5% tax
free, and offered me the lens for 11,700yen including the tax, saying that I
came back to the store in rain. It was not a big break, but I took it.
If any of you go to Tokyo, stop at Utsuki Camera near Shimbashi Station and try
some Oly lenses (new ones, particularly macro lenses were in a display case) or
even Cosina lenses (20mm, 24mm and 28mm) on the red-leather-covered OM-2.
