Sounds like you may have a short somewhere. The fact that the cable gets
hot indicates that current it traveling through it. Check the soldering at
the connector to make sure you don't have a small solder bridge. If you
can, pull the batteries and check the resistence between the positive
and negative sides of the connector. It should read zero.

Umm, that's backwards. The centre of the connector is *negative*, not
positive. Yup, the outside of the connector is positive. I just checked
double checked it with my AC Adapter 3 and that's the way it's wired up.
I doubt that may be causing your problems, but may as well get it right.
