As I understand it, the first Japanese camera products circa 1950s were not
of the best quality and were attacked by the established camera makers as
inferior. The Japan Camera Inspection Institute was formed by the Japanese
manufacturers and the cameras and lenses that passed an unknown inspection
process received the oval sticker. This would reassure the camera buying
public. Can you imagine them shipping a lens or body WITHOUT the sticker?
What would that mean- that it was inspected and FAILED? As you can surmise,
the stickers are meaningless.
