You can hold the slide/neg up to a window, or a light source like a bulb and 
look at
it with most any loop.
I just read an article a few days ago about color ink-jet printers, they said 
that
the ink would only last with bright colors for about 6 months, so they haven't
replaced the good ol photo lab yet.
