I took a piece of diffusion gel that I had left over from a stage lighting
project and made myself a couple diffusers for my Vivitar flash. I cut
the gel material (high temperature plastic sheet used for coloring or
diffusing stage lights) into a piece about 3 inches wide (width of the
flash plus 1cm more on each side) and about five inches long. This I
wrapped over the flash head and secured with a rubber band. The amount of
diffusion can be varied by changing the size of the "bubble" in front of
the flash.
For close up work I am getting about a 1/3 stop drop in flash power with
the diffuser, but by 3 meters it is well over 1 stop.
