If your switch is not broken there should be a little tab at the top. Gently
lift
this upward - it is spring loaded - and then move it away from the lens mount
until
it stops. This position activates the self timer. Self timing with MLU and
aperture pre-fire will commence when you press the shutter release.
You will hear a beeping sound, in conjunction with the flashing of the red
light,
for a few seconds then 3 or four seconds before the shutter fires the pitch of
the
beeping rises then click.
You now forget to return the lever to the 12 O'clock position - which cancels
the
self timer- and the next time you take a photo the viewfinder goes dark and you
hear
a beeping sound and you think "what the..." for a fraction of a second then you
exclaim "Oh No!" or some less polite epithet.
Welcome to the club.
If you lift the little tab and move it towards the lens mount it has the effect
of
cancelling the beep sound you get when you press the spot meter button. It
also
silences and the beeping when there is too much light and you get the blinking
over
exposure warning in the viewfinder.
This is very useful when photographing small children and other such wild
animals.
It solves the problem of spending 5 minuets slowly creeping toward that elusive
butterfly and having gotten really close and you are about to take the picture
so
you press the spot meter button - "BEEP" - you get a beautiful spot reading but
your
subject has departed.
