imho the main reason is to gain a safety DOF area. Other reasons are to
minimize "vignetting" and allow a better sight on the subject. Even if you
shoot always f/8 a bright lens is a joy to use.
Would you print with your enlarging lens at full aperture? But it is easier
to work with a f/2.8 than a f/4 lens, you know.
