I took a class from Joe MacDonald (top caliber nature shooter) and he did
three things to obtain his razor sharp telephoto images:
(1) splay the tripod legs and get the unit as close to the ground as is
possible.
(2) hang your photo bag onto the tripod. This increases overall mass by at
least double.
(3) place a sandbag (beanbag, anything, etc.) on top of the camera's
meter/mirror assembly to absorb vibrations.
He also uses mirror lock-up and a cable release.
