Ken,
It sounds like you need a Manfrotto 234 swivel head. It's a simple single-axis
pivot, actually, not a ball head. It doesn't cost very much, and is very
convenient on my monopod. The 234 is a non-quick-release version; there is also
a QR version, but I don't know the number. The female thread is 3/8", so you
might have to get a 3/8"-1/4" threaded adapter as well. The male thread (camera
end) is convertible for 1/4" or 3/8".
