I had an 18mm lens until recently (Sold to a friend to amass money
for a certain famous rangefinder). I had no trouble with the filters
(although I have decided to routinely buy thin-mt. when I can).
The fall-off can be really obvious, and I suspect that a lot of what
passes for vignetting on tests is really fall-off, specially with
the more extreme designs. Fall-off is common with most of the
hotshot new zooms (say f/2.8), and in many designs it is there
until f/8-f/11!
