Here's the response I got from the editors of Popular Photography,
regarding their suggestion to not fix an OM-1 but buy an OM-2000
instead.

We did not advise our reader not to "invest anything" in an OM-1, just not
to invest a lot of money in one that continued to give trouble shortly after
being repaired, particularly if the alternative was putting the money toward
the purchase of a new OM2000. We also pointed out that the OM2000, though a
good reliable machine, is not as beautifully made or sophisticated as the
OM-1.
