Interesting. Ponder and Best were USA distributors through 1977, so I wonder
if these could have been 1978 or later? At any rate, Olympus America got
into the "Premiums, Prizes and Persuaders" nick nacks big time beginning
early in 1986, probably in a follow the leader (Canon? Nikon?) fashion. It
included notepads, jackets, hats, keyrings, luggage tags, etc. Then there is
the whole arena of display and promotional materials, not to mention
literature. I have a good handle on the stuff available from March 1983 on,
but 1978 to 1983 is a black hole in my knowledge. That probably includes the
period of origin of my Olympus letter opener.
If anyone thinks this is bizarre, let me say that when a brand turns
collectable, there is a market for ephemera. Perhaps the biggest of all is
Coke-a-Cola.
