Take two plates of glass and drop them in a water bath. Watch the seeping of
water into the space between the plates. The developing pattern has the same
look as glue separation in lenses, although it can often be colored when
looking at lenses.
What is really sad is when the shop is clueless and has priced these according
to exterior cosmetics. Another thing to watch for: fungus. One can't always
make it out on a cursory glance. Take along a small flashlight and focus your
eye on various planes within the lens. It will look like a spider has made a
home in the lens.
These two things, plus lazy aperture blades and dented filter rings are most
easily overlooked by novices.
